How Should You Approach Your Next Virtual Interview?

How Should You Approach Your Next Virtual Interview?

If you’re a current jobseeker, you’ve probably noticed the world of interviewing has changed dramatically over the past couple years. Virtual interviews have taken the place of in-person interviews, resulting in both employers and candidates needing to adjust to this new and evolving interviewing format. As you connect with employers, here are some tips for how you can approach the virtual interview process:

Monitor your body language.

Body language is even more important during a virtual interview because improper gestures or poor nonverbal communication can be distracting to the interviewer, and worse, be detrimental to your overall performance. Making a point to sit up straight, smile, and make direct eye contact with the camera are simple yet powerful ways to connect with the interviewer. Furthermore, using your hand motions to complement verbal responses will show you’re fully and enthusiastically engaged in the conversation.

Dress for success.

Believe it or not, dressing for success matters just as much – if not more – for a virtual interview. Dressing appropriately, grooming, and presenting yourself professionally all matter when making a first impression and showing the employer you value the interview opportunity. In addition to elevating your appearance, dressing up can even impact your confidence level, and ultimately, how well you perform during the interview!

Follow up within 24 hours.

Immediately after a virtual interview, it’s important to promptly send a follow-up email to the person who interviewed you. In addition to thanking them for their time, this is an opportunity to highlight why you believe you’re qualified for the position and emphasize some of the conversation points that were discussed. Following up within 24 hours will demonstrate further interest on your part and ensure you stay on the interviewer’s radar.

By mastering the tips above, you’ll set yourself up for successful performance during all your upcoming virtual interviews.
